RELIGION: Pope John Paul II, Pope John XXIII To Be Declared As Saints

Popes John Paul II & John XXIII will be declared as saints next year, current Pope Francis has announced. Francis announced the date during a meeting with cardinals inside the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace, and said the canonization is set for April 27, 2014. Francis had announced in July he would canonize two of the 20th century’s most influential popes together, approving a second miracle attributed to John Paul. John XXIII has been also credited with a miracle.

LADIES BEWARE: Jealous Ex- Girlfriend sets rival ablaze for ‘snatching’ her boyfriend

A 20-year-old woman, Cynthia Onah, has been arrested by the Enugu state Police command for allegedly setting ablaze another woman, 22-year-old Chinwe Igwe for snatching her boyfriend, one Chika Kelechi. According to police report, the incident occurred at Onuba Nike East Local Government area of Enugu State at about 11: 30 pm when Cynthia had reportedly stormed her boyfriend’s house with a gallon of fuel and emptied its content on the victim who was already asleep before setting her on fire.

Describing the incident as unfortunate, The Commissioner of Police Enugu State, Mr. Mohammed Adamu was quoted saying “It is terrible that a girl because of jealousy would set another girl on fire simply because they are befriending the same boy.”

Unknown gunmen have launched a vicious attack on the College of Agriculture in Yobe state, killing an unspecified number of students.Details of the attack are still sketchy but the provost of the college, Mulima Mata, confirmed the incident, which the News Agency of Nigeria said occurred early Sunday morning in the Gujba district of the state. Reports say the students were shot dead as they slept in their dormitory.

The Industrial Court, Ikoyi, Lagos has given a ruling in favour of Jennifer Adighije-Okolo, the well known designer who is the creative director of the House of Silk against her former employer Helios Towers, a telecom firm. In the court ruling, the Telecom firm would need to pay, Jennifer Adighije-Okolo #13.55 Million for unfairly terminating her employment. Jennifer before the sack was the company's Head of Operations & Planning.

The Company had terminated their former employee's appointment for what they had termed poor performance (performing below par), Jennifer not satisfied with how she was sacked had taken the company to the Industrial Court, Ikoyi, Lagos seeking for redress. The end result of the case is her winning #9 Million which is the sum total of her salary from between February 1, 2010 to January 31, 2012. Apart from the #9 Million, the defendant would also be paying the claimant another #4.5 Million for damages and also awarded in the claimant's favour is another #50,000 cost.

According to Jennifer, she had been graded excellent by her immediate boss in her yearly appraisal, only for another appraisal body (the management review team) to have given an appraisal of below average, consequent upon which her appointment was terminated.

In his Judgement, Justice O. Abaseki-Osaghae said - The claimant testified as the only witness in support of her claims. She also stated that her performance was very much appreciated by the defendant that when there was a job rotation, she was asked to take charge as Head, Operation/Planning in September 2009. That all through her employment with the defendant, she was conscious of her personal objective with the defendant company, which she knew would form the basis of her rating in the annual appraisal.

Millions of married couples in the UK are to receive a tax break to recognise their ‘commitment and responsibility’, David Cameron reveals today. In an article for the Daily Mail, the Prime Minister says a £1,000 transferable tax allowance will be introduced in 2015. Stay-at-home mothers and women who work part time will be the main winners. ‘The values of marriage are give and take, support and sacrifice – values that we need more of,’ Mr Cameron writes.

‘Marriage is a good thing for our country – it’s the ultimate form of commitment under the law – and we want to show our support for it.’ The move, first promised by the Prime Minister when he ran for the Tory leadership in 2005, restores the financial recognition for marriage lost when a similar allowance was phased out in 1999.

The former Minister of Aviation has lashed out at Babatunde Fashola, the Lagos State Governor, over the latter’s decision to apologize to the Igbos following the deportation of beggars and destitute people to Anambra State. Femi Fani-Kayode, on Friday, said that the only redeeming factor is that the apology was designed to calm “frayed nerves.”

8 fake youth ‘corpers’ arrested and sent to prison

Eight persons who were reportedly posing as members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), after they were arrested, charged to court and ordered to be remanded in custody.

The accused persons are Agatha Azuma, Amarachukwu Okoro, Nicholas Eze, Blessing Samuel, Wisdom Nwoke, Paulyn Worgu, Cordelia Ugwuata and Blessing Duru.

The accused were brought before the Wuse Zone 2 Magistrates’ Court with Ramatu Gulma as the Chief Magistrate residing over the case. Chief Magistrate Gulma directed the defence counsel, Ijeoma Utchay, to apply formally for the bail of the accused, adjourning the case till 25 November for hearing.

The widow of soldier Lee Rigby broke down in tears today as Michael Adebolajo 28, and Michael Adebowale, 22, appeared at the Old Bailey via videolink and denied his murder.. Fusilier Rigby, who was from Middleton, Greater Manchester, was killed as he returned to Woolwich barracks in south-east London on May 22, and died from multiple cut and stab wounds.

Four-time FIFA footballer of the year Lionel Messi and his father Jorge arrived in a Spanish court this morning Friday September 27th to answer charges of alleged tax fraud. Messi and his father are being accused of hiding over £3.4 million by filing incomplete tax returns from 2006 to 2009.

The charges against father and son was lodged by a state prosecutor in June 2013 claiming that they tried to conceal earnings from Messi's image rights - charges they both deny.

The Edo State Justice Daniel Okungbowa of the Edo State High Court has been kidnapped. This incident happened less than three weeks after the release of a human rights activist and lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhomhe, SAN, by his abductors. Justice Okungbowa was reportedly kidnapped in Benin City, the state capital, while his whereabouts remain unknown at press time.

Meanwhie, the Benin branch of Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, led by its Chairman, Mr. Oriame Akene led lawyers to protest to the Edo State Police Command office and the Department of Security Service, DSS, where they demanded for the release of the abducted judge unhurt. The lawyers described the Judge’s kidnap as one too many and appealed to the security agencies to do something about it.

When contacted, Edo State Police Commissioner, Mr. Foluso Adebanjo, denied that the judge was kidnapped, noting that it was merely a case of missing person.
